MC 10 movie theater in University District to close this week

This bums me out so, so much: the AMC 10 in the U District has its last day today. I only learned about it this morning.

I remain hopeful that some other theater company takes it over. No other multiplex of this size has had more turnover in ownership since I have lived in Seattle. It was a Landmark Theater (The Metro) from 1989, through when I moved to Seattle in 1998, until it was taken over by Sundance Cinemas in 2012—my favorite era of the theater, when it introduced a dinner theater format with food and cocktails.

It's been an AMC Theater since 2017, this latest era being most convenient for me especially in the past three years or so when I have been an AMC-Plus monthly subscriber, as between this and Downtown's AMC Pacific Place I had fully 21 different screens to choose from on any given day. Now that screen number goes back down to 11, with the only AMC Theater in Seattle-proper being the one downtown.

To be fair, I went there 90% of the time anyway, and what they don't play going forward I'll probably start seeing more often at SIFF Cinema theaters again, and SIFF is far more deserving of my support anyway. Once I re-up my annual membership there, I won't have anything nearly as cost effective as the AMC membership, but SIFF members do get $5 discounted off all tickets.

Regardless of all that, I do hope that multiplex in the U District finds someone to take it over and keep it alive.
