Braniac's Revenge

Laney and I went to see A Minecraft Movie yesterday, and we both had a blast. We enjoyed it far more than expected, especially given its MetaCritic score of 46, in their "mixed or average" category and typically a dismal bellwether as to whether I'll actually like a movie. But, Laney and I leaned more towards the reviewers who actually liked it: it's just dumb fun, emphasis on fun.

It wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, and I ran through the several problems I had with it on my solid-B review. With a movie like this, though, the real measure of success is how much I laughed. And I laughed a lot at this movie.

On our walk together back up Capitol Hill, Laney surprised me somewhat by declarin she wanted to get a doughnut, as we approached Voodoo Doughnut at Minor Avenue on Pine Street.

We walked in, and I was sorely tempted to buy a doughnut. But then I thought: no. My budget is way too tight right now. If I weren't setting aside $100 for our day trip to the Tulip Festival on the 18th, I might have felt differently—not that I needed a doughnut regardless of price anyway.

But, guess what? There's a lady who works there, who had been there whe we all went there shortly after the store opened in December, who actually lives at Pride Place, Laney's apartment building. She was very excited, dancing and super fun with customers that opening week, and is always happy to see Laney when she sees her. Laney can't remember for sure but thinks her name is Mary Jane. So for today's purposes, let's say her name is Mary Jane. Mary Jane was there last night, and when I had just made a mental decision not to buy a doughnut, Mary Jane said, "It's on the house!" She said she can give doughnuts to friends and family, "And you're friends!" I guess she can take three and a half dozen per month. I don't know how anyone workin there doesn't gain a hundred pounds.

I had my eye on a new flavor, called "Brainiac's Revenge": Packed with lemon filling, coated in playful pink lemonade frosting and half-dipped in crunchy rainbow bits. The "rainbow bits" are actually Nerds candy, and I could live without that part, but at least the one I got was not fully half-dipped in it. And aside from that, holy fuckballs this doughnut was delicious. And I pulled it out and ate it as soon as we walked outside, because I have no self-control. Laney got the "Memphis Mafia," a kind of fritter drizzled with both chocolate and peanut butter—this was one of the flavors I got our first time there, and it is indeed delicious—and she had a plan: half last night, and half for breakfast this morning. I wasn't going to do any "halfsies" with mine, although in my defense the Memphis Mafia is a larger doughnut.

Shobhit was surprised by how long it had taken me to get home, as the movie was at 5:00, we expected to get out around 7:00 (which I believe it was, maybe a little after), and it's only a twenty-minute walk home. Three different things here, though: first, Laney walks a bit slower, something I have to be conscientious of; second, we stopped for maybe ten minutes at Vodoo Doughnut; and third, we stopped and chatted for a few minutes on the corner of Pine and Broadway before Laney walked down to her apartment building on Broadway on that block. I guess all this stuff kind of added up.

So, I was sitting down at home to start writing my review at about 8:00. I finished right after 9:00. Then I went to the living room to watch this week's episode of The Pitt—the penultimate episode of the season, excellent as always, and the first one we watched upon its release after binging all the other episodes last week—on Max with Shobhit. Then we watched this week's episode of Abbott Elementary on Hulu. Even that had me up a bit later than usual or desired, and I was in bed around 10:30.
